At the core of Grid Variations, presented at Five Walls, is an ongoing investigation into recurrence, pattern, and deliberate manipulation of the painted surface. Through this body of work, Stonehouse invites viewers to reflect on the paradoxical transformations that arise from a materially driven, iterative process.

Extending his sustained inquiry into compositional order, this presentation introduces a new group of works that engage the tension between structure and disruption. By physically slicing and reassembling painting surfaces into rhythmic grid formations, Stonehouse foregrounds materiality in ways that challenge the conventions of geometric abstraction. Rather than imposing uniformity, the material asserts its own logic, producing irregular repetitions and subtle deviations within the grid. As the artist observes, these processes generate a paradox in which order emerges through acts of fragmentation and reconstruction.

Rendered in bold chromatic fields, the works resonate with the formal concerns of Modernism and Minimalism while resisting the traditional limits of easel painting. By emphasising process, material labor, and structural instability, the exhibition positions abstraction as an evolving system—one that remains open to disruption, reconfiguration, and renewal.
